Oct. 25th, 2012 01:59 amThis is a letter to the editor that I am going to try and get put into my local town paper if there is time for next week's publication. It would get more circulation in the Rochester paper where my other letter was published, but they don't let you submit letters that close together. So hopefully it's not too late for next week's paper.
Dear Editor,
Who do you want making your medical decisions for you?
Who has the legal right to be in the doctor's office?
Well, like so many other women across this country, the women of our little corner of SE Minnesota have to share their doctor's appointments with our State Representative.
Mike Benson Republican Rep. has decided that he knows better about a woman's healthcare then either the woman or her doctor. Is this because he himself is a doctor and knows better? Nope. It is simply because Mr. Benson's religious beliefs TRUMP both a woman's wishes or her doctor's educated advice.
A few months ago I sent a petition to Mr. Benson asking him to support a woman's right to choose her own medical course with her doctor. This is his response to me.
"I am staunchly pro-life and believe life begins at conception. I believe a woman can make choices about her health so long as it does not endanger the life inside her.
My Christian worldview informs my decisions and I believe we are all, including the unborn, created with unalienable rights endowed by our creator.
You may share my answer with all who share your views."
I am not sure what I find more disturbing about Mr. Benson's response,
That he thinks he knows better then women and their doctors.
Or that he wants to enforce his religious views on the world.
If the Republicans, lead by people like Mr. Benson, are able to one day over turn Roe vs Wade and outlaw abortions, what are they going to go after next?
This is more than just a battle or a woman's right to choose her own healthcare.
It is a battle for all Our rights that have become very fragile in this country.
When you step into the voting booth on Nov. 6th. think long and hard on who you want making your decisions for you.
You or Mike Benson.
