.I can't tell you the last time I went to a gay bar and didn't hear a Miley Cyrus tune. I literally cannot remember. I've "partied in the U.S.A" all over my city, which is kind of ironic when you think about the fact that I live in Toronto. Long story short, I know many gay boys (and girls) that love Miley's music. But the question is: do we love her? Or rather, do we love her enough to make her the new generation's gay icon? I think we might. And there are a few reasons why.
"I can't only base my career off of six year-olds, it's the 16-year-olds, 26-year-olds that I am trying to reach now," she told the Daily Record. But what kind of 26-year-olds is she trying to reach? Considering her performance of her new single, Can't Be Tamed, at London's G-A-Y earlier this month, it can be deduced that she's interested in her homosexual following.
It doesn't take a scholar to see that she's actively courting a gay audience the way that Madonna and Kylie have traditionally done. She's like Lady GaGa without the freak factor.
Miley even prefers her gay best friend to her hottie boyfriend in some respects. “My best friend is gay, which doesn't help because he's always decked out really hot and then I see my boyfriend, and I'm just like, 'I kinda want that one,'" she said. And, yeah, it's a little bit stereotypical to promote that all gay guys have great style (anyone who has ever been to a gay village knows far better), but the fact that a "role-model" like Miley is talking about having a gay best friend is a positive thing in its own right.
Most recently, Miley dedicated a song to her gay fans. Before performing My Heart Beats for Love in Los Angeles at The House of Blues, Miley proclaimed, "I wrote this for my gay fans." She went on to say that, “Everyone has the right to love each other and no one should feel discriminated or judged for that.” Amen, sister.
She's making mistakes and she's growing up a little too quickly, but I'm starting to warm up to the idea of Miley Cyrus: Gay Icon. She's no Cyndi Lauper yet, but she's proving that she has ample love for the gay community and the notion of equality for all. She's just being Miley ... and I'm loving her for it.
