Last week, four Republican members of Congress plumbed the depths of anti-Muslim bigotry when they held a press conference requesting an investigation into whether Muslim interns in Congress are spies nefariously seeking to infiltrate congressional offices on behalf of the nation's largest civil rights organization for Muslims, the Council for American Islamic Relations (CAIR).
Reps. John Shadegg (R-AZ), Paul Broun (R-GA), Sue Myrick (R-NC) and Trent Franks (R-AZ) based their fear-mongering on a book published by World Net Daily, which is perhaps one of the least credible media organizations in the country and routinely caters to the paranoid fantasies of some of America's most fringe elements.
It's despicable to make congressional interns targets of suspicion simply because of their religion or ethnicity. Help stand up to the bullying of young people who's only "crime" is being eager to engage in the political process through internships on Capitol Hill... while Muslim.
This type of fear-mongering smacks of McCarthyism and must be confronted. We should applaud those who were quick to stand up including MSNBC's Rachel Maddow and several members of Congress like Reps. John Conyers (D-MI), André Carson (D-IN) and Loretta Sanchez (D-CA) who was first to respond with an excellent statement saying, "I am appalled by this request, and the insinuation that Muslim-Americans are somehow conspiring against this country through their work on Capitol Hill ... I urge the rest of my colleagues to join me in denouncing this witch hunt, which is clearly intended to create fear and distrust in our Capitol Hill community."
Tell the congressional leadership of both parties to take a strict stand against attempts to intimidate or scrutinize congressional interns based on their faith or ethnicity.
