A Day in the Life.........
Sep. 26th, 2018 08:22 pmI took dad back up to the VA this morning for the follow up visit after his surgical biopsy. We were early as usual, even with some stop and go traffic at the Mendota Bridge.
As we were sitting in the waiting room the Physicians Assistant that has been following to doctor came through. She said that she was with another patient some where else, but saw that we had appointments, a full day, and wanted to stop over and see how we were doing. Super nice of her. I told her as far as I know this was our only stop today. Mean while, I am thinking, what's going on. :o
Anyway, we eventually got called back. The nurse did her little check in duties. The nurse was actually from Rochester, aka the city where I work, so we chatted a bit. She asked where I worked and I told her St. Marys the Trauma ICU and she was like, You probably took care of my son a couple of years ago. Actually two years ago today he was in a car accident. Small world. :o
Then we waited a few minutes for the doctor to come. Eventually the Resident came in. She's quite bubbly. :p She talked about how it's good news we finally know what we are dealing with. I'm sitting there thinking Some of you know what we are dealing with. :o She eventually said, The good news is at least it's not cancer.
YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Apparently dad has some kind of RARE infection. The Resident said they were only able to find 17 documented cases of it. :o :o :o
Apparently my family can't do anything "normal". lol...
Then she talked about how they were going to be sending us to Infectious Disease and they would be taking over the case. Actually you are late for the appointment now, but that's our fault. :o I was like, What appointment? We were only aware of this appointment. Oh yes, they had booked us an appointment to see Infectious Disease and it was never passed along to us.
So we wrapped up with the ENT Resident, and she told us there was no more need to for follow up appointments with them any more. Okay...
Interesting side note: The PIA Consultant never showed his face. Seriously? Just goes to show that as soon as it was proved there wasn't any cancer for him to go after, he didn't care about my dad, IMHO.
Anyway we went out to the desk to find out where our other appointment was. One floor up and across the hall. :) We got up there, and the guy was like Name? I said Hayenga, and he was like WHAT? lol....... He's like not familiar with that name. :p We checked in and waited to be called back.
And guess who came walking out of back area? The Physicians Assistant that we saw at the beginning of the day. She got a big smile on her face and came over to see us. I said, Apparently we did have another appointment. She laughed. She chatted a couple of minutes and went on her way.
Eventually we were called back and got checked in. The nurse of course was all bent out of shape about dad's BP being elevated. I felt like saying, Well, maybe if you didn't run a 92 year old man all over the place it might not be elevated.
Then we waited a couple of minutes for the doctor to come in. Very nice and friendly. Said it was nice to put a face to the voice as we had talked over the phone with him once or twice.
He went over the results again with us. Again saying that it was a RARE infection. He explained that most people would normally fight off and infection with no problem, but that some people that have an immune disease or people getting organ transplants can have a lot of trouble fighting infections and can end up hospitalized because of them. He said that apparently for whatever reason dad is kind of some where right in the middle of that. He's relatively healthy, but apparently has some problem fighting off this infection. So the plan is to keep dad on antibiotics for a few months and hopefully that will be enough to clear up this infection.
We have a follow up visit to see how things are going in November.
So, the day ended up having WEIRD, but GREAT news. :)
Unfortunately, I am not once again, falling behind on LJland Dreamwithland and emails. :p
