A Day in the Life.........

disneydream06Last night I managed to get about a 4 hour nap. I was awake by 6 am. I got showered and took Maggie out for one last pee and poop run before heading up to the VA in Minneapolis.
We left the house about 8:15 am.
We got checked in at the out patient surgery desk around 9:45 pm. Dad's check in time was 11 am, and was third on the list for surgery. So I figured we would be sitting for awhile. Surprise, they called up back at about 10 am. :)
They got him stripped out of his cloths and into a cheap throw away gown, vital signs checked, and attempted to start and IV site. She failed. lol... She wrapped his arms in warm blankets, that helps to bring the veins out better, and we waited, and waited, and waited. Eventually somebody else showed up, an anesthesiologist, and popped an IV needle in with no problem. :)
Then we waited and waited and waited. Well, you get the idea. Shortly after 12 noon, the nurse came in to say that there had been some issues with the first case and so things were running behind schedule. Sorry...
I was reading my book and dad was off and on napping.
Eventually my butt got sore from sitting there for so long and so I got up and stood at the door. Suddenly the doctor came walking through. I told dad his doc just came through. Hopefully that means he's done with the first two cases and you are next. The doctor came into the room and apologized for the delay. He made some little mark on dad's neck and left. I went back to standing at the door and the nurse happen to come by and apologized again and said that they were done with that complicated case, and I was like, So they are just done with the first case? She said yes and the second one should be leaving any second now. This was about 2:50 pm.
About 3 pm another anesthesiologist came in and talked to dad about things. Then he left and a little bit later the other anesthesiologist, the one that started the IV site came in and said that things were running so late, she now had dad's case, and that because things were backed up so late, they were going to take dad into surgery now, and put him in another surgery room, so when the doctor was done with the second case, he could just move over and take care of dad without having to wait for things to be cleaned and set up again.
So I moved down the hall and around a couple of corners to the waiting room. I kept reading my book and dug out the bag of Munchies that I had brought along, and waited. After awhile the doctor showed up and said every thing went smoothly and they got several samples to check. He said dad would go into PACU room for awhile and they back to the area he started in and would be ready to go soon after that.

I sat and read for awhile. Then the desk attendant said that he would be moving to the original area soon, so I could head back down there and then the nurse would call me when I could go back. So I headed back down there, and got my book out. I managed to read a couple of more paged and watched some of the Ellen show.
Then the nurse popped out of the door and said I could come back in and that he would be ready to leave soon. Then she told me that they, the nurses, were all planning to kidnap my dad and take him home because he was so cute. YAY...... for dad being one of those older people. :)
Dad was awake and chatting. The nurse, same one we started with in the morning was doing some vital signs yet. Then she went over some post op cares and what not. Then dad was allowed to get up and get dressed. He was a little unsteady after being on his back for so long. Popped him in a wheel chair and headed down to the pharmacy to pick up a couple of meds and then out to get the car.
We got out on the highway at about 6 pm. Had some light rain off and on all the way home.
And finally got home at about 7:15 pm.
It is now 12:30 am and I have only briefly nodded off for a few minutes late in the evening, otherwise I am still awake. :o
