I finished up book No. 21 last night. Only because the book at 597 pages, but that 100+ pages were just notes, thank yous, and things like that. :o
I read, "Hope" by Richard Zoglin.
It is a biography of the actor/comedian Bob Hope.
I grew up enjoying his old movies, but this book sure painted a different picture of him.
As hard as the author tried to make him seem like the hardest working, most creative person, etc etc etc, the picture I came away with was he could deliver a great line written for him, but he was selfish jerk, womanizing, turd. :o
He was having affairs all the way through his 80s, and very few people ever talked about it. His wife played the dutiful loving wife and ignored and denied all of it.
His wife was a talented singer who gave up her career for her husband. The few times she would join him on stage when he was taping his tv specials he would almost always edit her out of the program.
He hired writers from an early age to write all his comedy routines. He pissed off some movie directors because he would take the scripts and give them to his writers so they could come up with jokes and gags to add in for him.
They adopted 4 kids. He was never home to be dad, and when he would be home, he wasn't dad, he was Bob Hope. :o
During WWII when many Hollywood stars were joining the military and going to war, Bob didn't and worked with the USO to go entertain the troops. The author never said if there was a real reason he couldn't actually fight. He turned these troop entertainments into a career. Eventually it did come back to bite him in the ass. He became a real hawk for the war in Vietnam and a lot of people turned against him because of that.
All through his career he always used Cue Cards. As he grew older his eye sight started to get bad and it would take up to 4 Cue Cards just to do one joke.
He continued to do his tv specials even after it was pretty obvious he should have stopped. He's eye sight was going, he was growing very hard of hearing, but refused to wear hearing aides because of vanity.
I will continue to enjoy his old movies, but the bloom is definitely off the rose as far as the man is concerned. :o
