Friday night I went to see Culture Club in concert.
Oh the great memories.
I saw them once before on what I think was their first big USA tour.
Friday night I had company for the ride back and forth to the show. My friend, [livejournal.com profile] thirteenrocks got a ticket from some friends of his.
I found my seat and there was a couple behind me that spend all time talking about "all the empty" seats up front and how they should move forward. Eventually they actually did move up several rows. Then the people came for those seats and they moved over a couple of more chairs. Eventually they had to give up and come back to their own seats. Poor babies.
Culture Club eventually came out on stage with many more people then I remember from way back when. I wish they had brought back their old back up singer, Helen Terry. She had an amazing voice. Check out a couple of the videos below.
It was a really good show. Boy George's voice wasn't quite as pure as when they first hit it big. Not sure if it's age, the drugs, a combination of both.
At one point, Boy George tried to quiet things down for a song. He tried to shush people. They started the song "Victims", but there was still a fair amount of chattering going on, and he just stopped the song and said he wasn't going to sing it if people were going to keep talking, and he told the band to move on to the next song. I thought, uh oh Diva melt down in progress, but not really. He calmly just moved the band on to the next song which was a really cool version of "The War Song".
Near the end of the concert they did a tribute to Prince and sang a fantastic version of "Purple Rain"
Then they ended the concert by coming back and doing the song "Victims", and it was FANTASTIC. :)

Unfortunately, the night ended with my vehicle acting up again and doing what it was just "fixed" for, at a cost of $150. WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They are definitely one of the first that come to mind when you think 80s music scene. :)

you always have those people who aren't happy with their own seat and will try to sit somewhere else.

It's great to hear you did enjoy the evening but boooo on the car

I was laughing to myself listening to them talk about moving up. I thought to myself, I dare you to move all the way up to the front row. The first few rows were all VIP tickets, costing either $300 or $400 a piece. I don't think people would be happy to find you sitting in their seats at that price.

It better not cost me another $150 to get the car fixed again. UGH...

I had to laugh because later in the concert they must have left to get more to drink or made bathroom runs or something, but somebody had moved into their seats. LOL..............

Yeah 80 icons but Boy is now a DJ and they should have not reformed unless they have new material.

But if all acts that didn't have new material stopped performing, the live music scene would be kind of thin. :(

From: [identity profile] davesmusictank.livejournal.com
True enough but i think any band that reforms SHOULD have new material.Music will never dry up anyway as the current Wire mag except for Shirley Collins have articles and reviews of music and artists i have not even heard of of before.

There are some acts I don't mind listening to the old stuff. I am forever stuck in the 80s anyway. LOL.......

I am seeing Stevie Nicks next month. She is touring with a new album, but it's not really new music, it's stuff she never put out before. So kind of new music. lol...

I don't know if you are familiar with Loretta Lynn?
I was pleasantly surprised to see in the store the other day she has a new Christmas album out. :)

Lynn is a country singer right? Not my cup of tea.

Yep, she's old school/real country music. That's the kind of country music I grew up on. :)

They do have new material, if you consider songs from 2 years ago new. They had a new album all recorded and finished from what I understood, and were planning to release it in early 2015. They took pre-orders through PledgeMusic. But the release was delayed for whatever reasons. PledgeMusic finally refunded all orders in August 2016, as it was taking so long. They've been playing a mix of old songs and new in their concerts, from what I understand. I saw them in Boston last year and have tickets to the upcoming Augusta show.

WOW, I didn't know they had a new album in the works. I hope they release it soon.
They did sing a couple of songs I wasn't familiar with. Not sure if they were new, or just old songs I didn't know.
Augusta as in Georgia? My brother and his family live across the highway in Evans, Georgia. :)

Yes, Augusta Georgia, the day before Thanksgiving.

The new album is supposed to be called "Tribes". These were the new songs from it that they played during last year's concert, along with all their old hits:
Let Somebody Love You
Like I Used To
Human Zoo
Different Man
Runaway Train
More Than Silence

YouTube has concert clips of all of them if you search. Maybe they aren't playing as many of them this year? I hope they do though.

Thank you for this information.

The title Runaway Train sounds familiar, but I can't say for sure that they did sing it.
Other then Prince's Purple Rain, Cream's Bang a Gong, and a couple that I didn't recognize, I think all the songs they sang were old hits.

I'm glad Boy George is still performing. I remember when he first came on the scene, my dad's reaction was priceless...."Is that a boy or a girl?"

Sorry to hear about your car :o(

I hope to get it in the shop Monday or some time this week. At least with me not working, it's not an emergency to get it looked at.
But it better not cost me another $150. :o

I love Boy George and yeah, I think his voice will never be the same again but I am sure he was still a great performer. I would have loved to hear him do Purple Rain!

Sorry about your car. I guess it's back to the shop with complaints. They better correct things and for free. Grr!

Hearing Purple Rain live was better then the video I posted.
He really is entertaining. :)

I won't hold my breath for free, but fixed would be really nice. UGH...

Idiots pretty much sums them up. UGH...

I am guessing they don't go to a lot of concerts either. They were whining about all the empty seats and it's two minutes to 8. When was the last time a concert/show ever started when it was scheduled to start? They didn't get started that night until almost 8:20. Surprise.......

Hello! (I say after wondering if it might be impolite to only post a reply to someone else's comment on your post.)

I happened to be browsing the LJ home page, which included your post in the list, and the bit about Culture Club caught my eye. I'll be attending one of their concerts too in 2 weeks, if all goes well. As for BG's voice, I suspect it is a combination of both age and past drug use. There was a fabulous clip of him singing some song in a deep voice. Let's see if I can find it... here it is (it's a wonderful world):

Hi, Thank you for commenting. :)
I hope you enjoy the concert as much as I did the one I went to. :)
That is a great clip. Thanks for sharing it.
He still has a great singing voice, but he doesn't seem to get quite as high and for lack of a better word, "pure".
I know he's had a very successful career DJing, but I am so glad he is touring again. :)
