I just finished up book No. 42 tonight.
I read Shirley Jones A Memoir by Shirley Jones.
She is probably most well known for playing Shirley Partridge on The Partridge Family, but she also was in movies Oklahoma, Carousel, Elmer Gantry, for which she won an Oscar, and many others.
She is quite the lady. And a whole lot of contradictions.
She spends a lot of the book convincing us that she's not the innocent Mrs. Partridge when it comes to her sexual life. She LOVES sex. However, she saved her virginity for her first husband, Jack Cassidy, a married man. Jack was a HUGE womanizer and pretty much flaunted it in her face, never apologizing for it, and she accepted it because he was her husband and she loved him. She eventually even had a three way with him and a back up dancer from a show they were doing because he wanted it.
She finally had to give up on the marriage after Jack had a break down, was diagnosed as being bipolar and refused treatment. One night nearly burning down their house with her and the kids in it.
She eventually fell for another man, comedian Marty Ingalls, who ironically was later diagnosed as being bipolar. :o She openly admits that even though she loves Marty, the true love of her life will always be Jack.
The kids hate/hated Marty and now after nearly 40 years of marriage, from the sounds of it, just tolerate him. :o Very mature boys.
Towards the end of the book she points out that even now in her late 70s, she loves to masturbate. :o
On a side note, in this political season, she grew up in a family of Democrats only to be a Republican herself. So disappointed in Mrs. Partridge. lol... Gotta wonder how she feels about Trump? lol.....

That is pretty weird to read all of that about Shirley Jones. It feels a bit TMI, ahh hah! I guess it is healthy for people to write books like that though.

I forgot all about Jack Cassidy. He always looked strange and unbalanced to me, now I get it.

Hugz,
Helen

Oh yes, I think she was definitely going for the shock factor.
She shared that Jack was quite well endowed and, not sure how she knew, but David, his son from another marriage, was even bigger. :o

It also goes to show you which marriage was important to her in that she has been married twice as long to Marty, but he maybe got about a 1/4 of the book. Granted her career is a lot slower at that point.

That is interesting. It sounds like it was true love. It must have been so painful for her to see him so sick and not taking his meds, that is sad :-(

I have a real problem listening to her accept his womanizing. :o

That is sick. It is surprising what 'true love' will put up with. :-o

That's a mentality that I hope is dying out. :o

Yes! I hope it does die out. I think it has to do with low self esteem.

Trump is why she probably included the masturbatory part ... LOL!

I've read that Jack Cassidy was gay or bisexual. Any mention of that in the memoir?

Yes actually. He apparently told her he had a one off with a theater guy to get a job, but then somebody told her later that he had a relationship with this guy. :o

She was the female lead in both Oklahoma and Carousel.

Not that I'm aware of. I may have been too young, though.

I have seek Oklahoma, but not Carousel.

Carousel is kind of dark story. I think there is abuse and/or murder involved. You know you typical light musical. :p

I think The Partridge Family originally aired late 60s or early 70s.
I had to look it up. It starte in the 1970 and ran for 4 seasons.

Interested in sex but still wanted to stay a virgin till she got married .. does not sound like a recipe for a happy life to me nd comedienne that he was such a womaniser.
Sounds a fascinating read nonetheless.

I don't know if I would call Jack Cassidy a comedian.
But definitely a womanizer, and apparently bisexual on top of it all. He told her he had sex with a theater guy to get a job, and then later somebody told her that he actually had a relationship with the guy. :o
