This is beyond disgusting.....
That man killed Black people in their Church and opening admits that it was a hate crime, so what does the State of South Carolina do? They continue to fly the Confederate Flag outside the State legislature and NOT lowering it to half staff. ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Confederate flag, despite massacre, still flies high

Date: 2015-06-19 01:51 pm (UTC)Last night, the clip showed that the US flag and the Confederate flag on different poles and even though the US flag was half staff, it was still above the Confederate flag. The only requirement for flags is that the US flag must be the highest flag when on US property.

Date: 2015-06-19 05:49 pm (UTC)At least state governments should not continue the allegiance
i understand people wanting to remember their ancestors who died in that horrendous war
but the terrible truth is that Bull Connor and the fire hoses was not that long ago
and the "heritage" is being passed on
the killer is only 21
give MSNBC credit - they are refusing to show his face

Date: 2015-06-20 03:20 am (UTC)but at the same time, i know there were terrible atrocities. i know that there is a black family in maryland who is related to us, and has the paper that acknowledges his family as being "from the body of" the slaveowner. that's also a part of my family history, and i claim it. we were never perfect, we did things that were not right.
i feel about those antecedents as i do about the ones who fought in the american revolution...they fought for what they thought was right, even though it was NOT about slavery, it was about wanting to not be told what to do by the northern government. i can see *that* part of it, but not the ownership of other human beings. (we were not slave owners by that time.) i cannot change the past, but i can claim what part of it is mine. am i a confederate flag waver?
no, but i could be in both Daughters of the American Revolution and Daughters of the Confederacy if i wanted. my grandparents are buried in "the confederate cemetary" in our home town. being proud of being a Southerner, a Texan, is a very boggy field. i have to be able to accept the bad parts as well as the good. (and no, there is only confederate battle songs from both north and south on my computer, nothing else "southern confederate" in my home.)
long ways around to say "after living in south carolina, and KNOWING that church, i am saddened by this act of home-grown terrorism and it is one more reason to get the confederate flag OFF the statehouse, as the argument to do so has been raging there for decades now."

Date: 2015-06-20 04:44 pm (UTC)we had a man walk into the city hall in the place where my grandmother lived, asking if anyone knew where (my grandmother) could be found...she happened to BE there that day working with a committee on something. he was like a 3rd cousin of hers, and had taken vacation...
so that he could look up major family members (as a mother of 7 children, she counted as major), talk to them, find their family tree AND SHARE the family tree that he was carrying with him which traced the family back to pre-American Revolution days. my dad took *that* info, then at one of the family reunions taped the WHOLE thing on a wall, and had everyone put THEIR info up there. he's the one who did all this work, then my aunt pulled that stunt and since she's ALWAYS been a controlling bitch, no one was shocked. *eyeroll*
but it's comforting to me to know who i am and where i came from.
