Dear North Carolina Republicans,
WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! is wrong with you?
Their new anti voting laws are virtually going to prevent any college student from voting in their state.
Rachel Maddow was just talking about a student in North Carolina who has been there for the last few years. He will be a senior this year and has decided he wanted to stay in the city after he graduated and wanted to run for the city council.
The Republican leader of the voting board there challenged his residency and the Republican controled voting board naturally voted against this young man and stipped him of his right to run for city council and to also vote in the state.
The same Republican leader of that voting board said he plans to challenge other students at that college.
He is virtually going to prevent any and all students at this college from voting.
The Republicans will steal the next elections if they have to, and these draconian anti voting laws will do it for them.
Turn out the lights America, We are done................

Date: 2013-08-16 09:53 am (UTC)Basically, conservative 'tea party' lawmakers are specifically targeting UNC Chapel Hill (they've also been doing their best to make life difficult for the traditionally uber-liberal university and town by cutting funding for the university, but that's a whole 'nother story...)
The new laws will make it difficult for a student from say, Morganton NC from voting while away at school. They have to go back to their home district to vote - and things like same-day registration, early voting and absentee voting have much more stringent guidelines.
The whole idea here is to prevent the poor, innocent kids just trying to get an 'edumacation' from being unduly influenced by all the liberal college professors, intellectuals and hippies from coercing them from voting democratic while they away in the big cities of Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill.
There are already legal challenges lining up. Also, Goverenor McCrory admitted he signed the law without reading much of it - a tacit admission he does whatever millionaire Republican mega-donor and state budget director Art Pope (our version of a Koch brother....) tells him to do, no questions asked.

Watauga is a mountain county - traditionally very white, Christian & conservative.
Watauga also is home to Appalachain State University and the mountain ski resort city of Boone. Watauga was one of the counties that voted solid for Barack Obama in the election - and one of the county that voted against the 'Traditional Marraige" Amendment 1 last spring.
The Republicans in the county are definitely trying to minimise the impact of the 'liberals' at App State and in Boone on their voting habits.

Date: 2013-08-16 01:35 pm (UTC)The mega donor I mentioned above, Art Pope, is well connected with the Koch Brothers. I've heard the political tactics they're implementing here will be a 'testing ground' for how to implement 'business-friendly' laws and influence elections and political thinking throughout the rest of the country.... one election at at time.
