I remember when I was young, my mom, brother, sister, and I went to Texas to spend a bulk of the summer in a farm house. And it seemed like most every night we were in the cellar because of tornado warnings.
It was an interesting method of receiving the warning. The TV station would sign off after the late night news at like 10:30 or 11, and send out a silent audio carrier. You'd leave your TV turned on and the volume loud, and if there was a warning or alert, they'd broadcast an alarm and your TV would wake up the household!
