It did indeed come from the 1932 movie, "Grand Hotel".
It starred a who's who of the great actors at the time.
Greta Garbo, John Barrymore, Lionel Barrymore, Wallace Beery, Lewis Stone, Jean Hersholt, Joan Crawford...
It's the story of all these people gathering and intermixing at the Grand Hotel.
I believe the 1980's tv show "Hotel" was based on the movie.
