Jul. 17th, 2018 10:07 amSo, Sunday night I went up to Minneapolis to see the musical West Side Story. It's playing at the Guthrie Theater. I saw it with my friend,
mrdreamjeans.
Anyway, I know the show, and the movie, but I don't think I have ever actually seen either. So it was all fresh for me. :)
I have always had to chuckle a little bit about singing and dancing gang members. As much as I hate the description when it's used this way, but it's a little Gay. lol......
However, the singing and dancing was amazing. They have a great cast, and if I am being totally honest, there was some great eye candy to drool over amongst the gang members. One guy was built quite well and my eyes kept wandering his way. LOL.........
There were several times during the show that things were said that, I don't know if it was all in the original script or if it was added for the times, but made great political statements for the times. Mostly involving the acceptance of Puerto Rico as part of the United States.
Knowing that it's loosely based on Romeo and Juliet, I knew there was going to be heartbreak at the end, but it still caught me off guard and I was bawling during the final scene. :o
If I had anything bad to say about the production, there was one actor in the Jets gang that through most of the show I thought was being played as mentally handicapped, but nothing was ever mentioned about it, and he was making out with the ladies like nothing was wrong. Then in the second act after the rumble had taken place and they were hiding out from the police this character suddenly sits down and pulls out a syringe and starts shooting up drugs. It was so completely out of left field. At least it explained why his character was jerking around stage all night. His drug use was never explained or talked about in the show. Just really weird to put it in there.
Another clue that the show was really good, it was a Sunday night and it looked like it was a sold out audience. :)
Minnesota loves it's theater. :)
