She started off as a child star, and was lucky to keep working as an adult.
She battled, I can't think of the term they use now, manic depression, and I think was one of the first celebrity people to admit it publicly.

I just loved it! I wonder it if was hard for her - I mean to act in it, after reading she was bi-polar. Or maybe it felt like an outlet, I wonder.

At the time it felt like magic when I would see 'both of them', and it was just her.

Duke's own series, The Patty Duke Show, which Sidney Sheldon created especially for her, began in 1963. At that time, it was not known that Duke had bipolar disorder, but Sheldon did notice that she had two distinct sides to her personality and thus developed the concept of identical cousins with contrasting personalities.[16]
