After leaving Thunderhead Falls I head back to Custer and the hotel. Along the way I decided to take a detour and drive through the Needles Highway. It a scenic highway drive. It consists of narrow drive lanes, hairpin turns, and single lane tunnels. Oh, and some beautiful scenery.
First I stopped by the Pactola Dam and Reservior. I wanted to get some pics of the fog rolling through the valleys and check out the reservior level.

I think this section or rock is known as the Cathedral Spires...

If you see the little white spots in the middle there, they are mountain goats. They were approximately in the middle of the previous photograph...

It is such an amazing drive.
My fear of heights got to me a little bit as I was going up these winding roads that barely fit two cars and I was on the outside of the road. EEP... :o

They are short enough tunnels that you can see uncoming traffic before you enter.
The middle tunnel is the only one that really requires you watch and pay attention for the most part.

You know I was liking on this! I love challenging roads and long for a car trip to a place like that! Nice scenery... and it almost looked like you were shooting for a BMW ad there with those two shots of an older 7-series coming through the tunnel.

With the bicyclists you see, there were quite a few of them, and even more impressive? There was a tandem bike on the highway. :o WOW... That is pretty gutsy. :o

I believe there is another road that you can take with tunnels like that that if you are driving in the right direction, you get a framed view of Mt. Rushmore from about 3 different tunnels.
