Perry Campaign Says It’s Going “Like Wildfire”

Texas Governor Rick Perry is already taking over former Governor Mitt Romney’s status as front runner for the GOP presidential nomination. Now he is trying to win Romney’s other claim to fame – most tone deaf candidate on the trail.
Perry very publicly skipped last weekend’s South Carolina forum being put on by Senator Jim DeMint, despite already being in the state, fundraising, claiming he needed to get back home immediately to deal with the wildfires that were devastating the state. He then left Texas briefly to head to California for the Reagan Library debate — staying in California for a 1000 person rally, and to gather more campaign contributions along the way.
Asked how the fundraising was going, his campaign replied, “it is going like wildfire.”
The state is being ravaged by uncontrollable fires and facing one of the worst droughts it has ever seen, and Perry and his campaign think that was an appropriate phrase to use? Burnt Orange called the comment “woefully ignorant and insulting to the Texans who have lost their homes, and some their lives, in this dreadful season of drought,” continuing:
This has been an abominably bad year for Texas wildfires:
The Bastrop fire has consumed over 1400 residences, the worst loss in the history of Texas wildfires.
Tuesday marked the 294th consecutive day of Texas wildfires, according to Inciweb, a fire-tracking website maintained by state and federal agencies.
Over 3.5 million acres of Texas land have burned in wildfires this calendar year so far.
Texas contains almost 50% of the national acreage consumed by wildfires this year
Maybe it’s time for Romney to just sit back and let Perry dig his own hole for a while.
