On Eve of Holocaust Remembrance Day, Bachmann Compares Taxes To "Holocaust"
posted by: Robin Marty

Is paying taxes to fund a social safety net that will keep millions of poor, sick and elderly people alive and healthy comparable to killing millions of people in gas chambers? Congresswoman Michele Bachmann says no, then makes the comparison anyway at a speech given appropriately enough on the eve of Holocaust Remembrance Day.

Via the Concord Monitor:

Amid sweeping campaign rhetoric denouncing government entitlement programs and taxes, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann compared "our economic liberty being pulled out from under us" to the Holocaust.

Careful to note there is no direct analogy between the two, Bachmann, a potential Republican candidate for president, said current generations will be held accountable if they don't take action now - the same way Americans were after World War II, for not stopping the systemic murder of 6 million Jews and other minorities.

...

"It is morally reprehensible and we will have to answer, what did we do when we had the chance," she said.

Even more disturbing? According to the Monitor, the comment evoked no reaction from the audience.

It's amazing how in the decades passing since the end of the Holocaust, it becomes so easy to toss the term around. "Abortion is the new Holocaust," claim anti-choice activists. "Taxes are a Holocaust," Bachmann and her ilk are trying to proclaim now.

The Holocaust is the Holocaust. Using it for political point-scoring simply cheapens the real tragedy that occurred. There is simply no comparison.

I'll bet she's going to be one of the ones cynical about Bin Laden death. I made the mistake of going to Fox News where there were a lot of comments about Bin Laden's death and burial at sea being an Obama conspiracy to help his popularity numbers and take emphasis off the economy.
