What is up with Youtube?

I just tried to sign onto Youtube and was told I would no longer be able to unless I linked to a Google account.

What exactly is up with that?
Call me stupid, but what does linking Youtube to my Google account do?
Is this a case of internet Big Brother?
Does Youtube get to track my Google account or is it vice versa and Google gets to track my Youtube activity?

Am I just paraniod?

I already have a google account, but I wasn't asked to log in to it before going to the videos. I'm curious about that now....

I had gotten these messages before, but I was always able to skip it and just go to the vids, but now it won't let me.

Google owns youtube. It has for a while. I guess they're trying to move everything onto google's native system and phase out independent youtube stuff.
