UGH.....

I stopped and talked to my manager before I left work this morning.
I wanted to let her know I was probably going to be reported by one of our patients.
A patient put his call light on, and the nurse asked me if I could answer it.
I soon found out why she didn't want to go in the room.
I went into the room and the patient wanted his ostomy bag emptied.
That was not the problem.
Then he started complaining about the air fan in his room constantly running.
I tried to explain to him that we can control the temperature in the rooms, but the fans just kind of run on their own.
Well, at home there is an on/off switch.
I tried again to explain that we can only control the temperature. The fans just run on their own.
Well, Isn't There Maintenance In This Building?
I said, Yes, There is and we will have somebody come look at it for you.
That's when he went off on me.

He kept carrying on and then complained that he came and now he was going to get pneumonia.
I just stopped talking to him and charted his ostomy output and left the room.

What a complete ASSHOLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I said that to the nurse and she said yeah, that's why she asked me to answer his light because she just couldn't deal with him again.
UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not sure which is worse physical abusers or the verbal abusers.
I do not get paid enough to do this job any more. :o

And the nurse didn't want to deal with him so you had to, argh!

I read an article, IIRC on HuffPo, about a woman who quit hospital nursing after only 18 months, found a position in research nursing and became infinitely happier. A doctor friend of ours, went to school with my wife as an undergrad, she quit private practice and went to work as an urgent care doc and also became considerably more happy.

Though I'm not religious, You Are Doing The Lord's Work. I have zero comprehension how you've been able to do it for so long.

I am not sure if I have a lot more bedside care in me, but I am not sure what the alternative is without a pay cut or losing union seniority. :o

Check out research nursing!  There's a lot of administrative side to it, but I think the nursing side is a lot simpler, and I imagine it's much more strictly an 8-5er.  No idea about pay or the union side.

I imagine he was very old. What I find works is that when the complaining in constant, totally bring up a light topic like, "Oh, you know the planet Mars can be seen in the sky tonight!" or something totally unexpected to them because they are obviously looking to fight and if you throw them off, they don't know how to respond. Works almost every time! xx

well, it works for all ages. When we are in a bitch session, the only thing to stop the cycle is something "drastic" or a jolt. When something completely opposite of what he/she is doing happens, it stops the thoughts dead in their tracks. Try it if you are in that situation again.
