I just got home from going to my first new movie in the theater in literally one year.
The last time I saw a new movie in the theater was March 7, 2020. Shortly after that the theaters closed in Minnesota.
Today I wanted to see the new Disney animated movie, Raya and the Last Dragon. It is being shown on the IMAX screen, but only twice during the day and the last one being 3:10 pm. It is also being shown on a Superscreen and several regular screens. As much as I wanted to see it, 3:10 pm is right in the middle of my sleep time so that was out. Well, that was out until I woke up at 2:10 pm. So I got out of bed and went to see the movie on the IMAX screen, and at matinee prices it was cheaper. And surprisingly I even got my work discount, so I saw it on the IMAX for $10.27.
Now for a lame review/thoughts on the movie.
It's the story of an Asian kingdom that divided into 5 different parts named for different parts of a dragon after the dragon gods were "defeated". Distrust and anger brews between the different parts of the kingdom. One leader tries to bring the everybody together and it of course falls apart. The demons that helped bring an end to the dragons return and the daughter of formerly mentioned leader must try to save the day.
I said it would be a lame review. lol...
Some thoughts on the film itself.
The animation of the people felt kind of cheap. It made me feel more like this was an animated movie for The Disney Channel instead of the theater. The animation of the dragon and scenery was much better.
That said, as great as the Pixar movies have become, they still have issues with animated people.
The story moved along really well.
The little band of characters she meets and gathers as she goes are great.
And in the end it made me cry. First sad, and then happy. :)
It left me thinking it would be fun if these characters came back for another story. :)
If I graded it?
Letter Grade: B+
Star Grade: 4****
Thumbs: 2 Thumbs Up
In Minnesota movie theaters are limited to 25% capacity.
It wasn't even close to that, but there were a few people in the theater today.
I sat in the back row in a corner, so everybody was in front of me. And I wore an N95 mask covered by one of my Disney masks. lol...
