House Republicans Fail to Show Up for 'Defending Marriage' Committee Hearing
posted by: Steve Williams

Republican Rep. Trent Franks found himself rather lonely at his "Defending Marriage" subcommittee hearing Friday when other Republican members of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, which Franks chairs, failed to show up.

The purpose of the hearing was, Franks said, to discuss the Obama Administration's decision that after careful review it could not defend the constitutionality of Section 3 of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act that bans federal recognition of same-sex marriage.

The bipartisan 10-member panel should have put Franks among solid anti-gay company with fellow Republican legislators Steve King and Jim Jordan.

However, all five Republicans declined to show up, leaving Franks as chair to deal with the Democratic members of the panel who were all advocating for the repeal. His only support came from two speakers who had opted to give their views at the hearing, one of which was the National Organization for Marriage's Maggie Gallagher who can always be counted on to offer her opinion on the so-called gay agenda.

Rick Santorum's First Campaign Move - Run Away From Campaign Slogan
posted by: Robin Marty

Senator Rick Santorum has made it clear long before his potential presidential run that he's not a very big fan of homosexuals -- a fact that he has made public so loud and so often that gay advice columnist Dan Savage retaliated by turning him into an internet joke.

His feelings don't appear to have softened in the least since then, if his latest campaign appearance proves anything. When asked at a stop what it meant that his campaign slogan was taken from a poem by Langston Hughes, an African American Communist poet known for fighting for civil and gay rights, Santorum began to quickly back away from the branding.

Via the Union Leader:
Santorum by and large stayed on message but was tripped up a bit when a student asked him if he knew that the choice of his slogan, "Fighting to make America America again," was borrowed from the "pro-union poem by the gay poet Langston Hughes."

"No I had nothing to do with that," Santorum said. "I didn't know that. And the folks who worked on that slogan for me didn't inform me that it came from that, if it in fact came from that."

The student, whose name was not immediately available, was referring to the poem "Let America Be America Again." When asked a short time later what the campaign slogan meant to him, Santorum said, "well, I'm not too sure that's my campaign slogan, I think it's on a web site."

It was also printed on the campaign literature handed out before the speech.

I'm almost positive I hear Dan Savage chuckling somewhere right now.

It is the first anniversary of the BP Deepwater Horizon oil rig disaster.

Too many people, animals, and plant life was killed by this disaster.
PLEASE don't for them.

And don't let our government forget them either.
Tell your congress members and the president that you do not want that kind of disaster to happen again.

Jan Brewer Signs Married Straights Get Preferential Treatment Adoption Bill
posted by: Steve Williams

In a move that has disappointed LGBT rights groups and wider child welfare groups alike, Arizona governor Jan Brewer on Monday signed a bill into law that instructs adoption and foster agencies acting on behalf of the state to give priority to married heterosexual couples.

SB 1188 as the bill is known does not constitute an outright ban on same-sex couples adopting but will put them at a greater disadvantage during the adoption/foster care process. The same for prospective parents that are single. Opponents of the bill said that it is overreaching and a fundamentally "bad law" that takes focus from the key issue: child welfare.

Undocumented Immigrants Pay More In Taxes Than Wealthy
posted by: Jessica Pieklo

A new study released by the Immigration Policy Center for tax day shows that at least half of the undocumented immigrants in this country pay income taxes. Add that to the sales and property taxes that those undocumented persons also pay and undocumented immigrants pay more in taxes than most wealthy Americans.

The total amount of tax revenue collected in state and local taxes is approximately $11.2 billion, including $1.2 billion in personal income taxes, $1.6 billion in property taxes and $8.4 billion in sales taxes.
