A Day In The Life.......
Feb. 4th, 2022 06:33 amThursday was a day I hope I never have to have again.
I got off work just after 7 am. I thought about stopping to do some grocery shopping or maybe some other shopping, but I decided to just go home instead.
I got home around 7:30 am and was getting ready to take Maggie out. So I was going back to my bedroom to change into warmer cloths then my work scrubs because it was COLD outside. I heard some heavy breathing coming from dad's room, so I figured he must be up already.
I looked in his room, the light was off, and I didn't see him in bed. I heard him call my name.
OMg... I found dad laying on the floor dried blood all over the place. :o :o :o
I was able to lift him up and get him sitting on the edge of the bed.
He had a cut on his head and scraps and bruises elsewhere.
I asked him how long he had been there. He told me some time after 3 am. I don't know if he knew that for certain or just through out a time, but if that was the case he had been there for about 4 hours. :o :o :o
Dad started to get up and grab his walker and I was like, where are you going? I gotta go to the bathroom. So I walked him to the bathroom. He was very shaky. After that I cleaned up his head as best I could, and took him back to his bedroom to get him dressed so I could take him to the ER. Then I walked him out to the kitchen so he could take his morning meds.
Meanwhile I called the neighbor lady to see if she could take Maggie out for the morning. She said that she had an 8:30 appoint, she works mostly from home, but thought she could do it.
I got dad ready to go, and neighbor lady came to get Maggie. She said she cancelled her appointment so she was all good to take Maggie out. SUPER NICE lady.
I got dad bundled up, it was below 0F. By the time I got him in the car neighbor lady was coming back with Maggie. So I got Maggie back in the house and headed out to the ER with dad.
I dropped him off at the door and went to park my car in the employee parking ramp. I am not paying for ER parking when I work there and have parking privileges. :o Got back to the ER and they had already taken dad back to a room and I told where to go. Side note, I see they have added a metal detector to the ER waiting room now. :o
I found dad's room and began the process of talking with nurses and doctors as they came in.
Blood work, CT scans, and urine tests were all ordered.
A couple of doctors came in to start working on dad's head, stitch it up, and of course that's when they came to get him for his CT scan. So after he came back, those doctors came back and started to work on his head. They ended up putting in something like 7 stitches.
CT scan showed that his head was okay, and his neck was okay, but it did find a couple of cracked ribs. So of course we have to worry about his breathing and getting pneumonia.
They actually talked about sending him home. I was surprised because I expected him to be kept over night. Eventually they got him up and walked him a little to see how he did. He was moving better then he did after I got him up off the floor. So that was a good sign. We got back to his room and set him in a chair and he sat there for awhile.
Main doctor came back in and talked to us/me and I decided I was okay to take him back home. He also talked about all the other things they found on the CT scan. UGH... I wish they would stop doing scans and finding things. We will need to make a follow up appointment with dad's regular doctor about the fall and the scan results.
We finally got out of the ER after 2 pm. AKA, I had been awake for 21 hours at that point. :o
I got dad home and he started wondering around doing things. I wanted to get Maggie out, but wasn't going to leave dad until he sat down some where. I finally got him to sit down at the kitchen table and I took Maggie out. When I got back to the house, dad was sitting at the table going through the mail. I said, So you got up and got the mail, huh? I bluntly told him if he falls again, he's probably going to end up in a nursing home, and I don't want that to happen. Then I got him settled into his chair in the living room to look at the mail and read the paper. Then I went downstairs to get on my computer to check out emails and just chill for a bit. I think I might have nodded off for a few minutes. Then it was almost supper time, so I made dad some soup and a tuna salad sandwich, and made a couple of sandwiches for myself. I went back downstairs and ate my sandwiches and watched some tv and tried to work on emails some more. I think I nodded off for a few more minutes. I went upstairs to check on dad and he said he thought he would go to bed early. I don't blame him. Eventually I got him tucked in bed. I told him not to get up and go to the bathroom in the night, he has two urinals at the bedside and to use them. I went back downstairs and promptly started falling asleep, and I basically slept off and on all night long.
It's morning now, and time to start the day, aka getting Maggie out and then get dad up and moving and doing the dishes and so on and so forth.....

Date: 2022-02-05 04:52 am (UTC)Our hospital has been really busy/full, and not necessarily because of covid.
IT's been so busy that we have been getting general care patients up in the ICUs because they don't have rooms in the general care stations. :o :o :o
