I just finished book No. 34, Gods & Monsters by Christopher Bram.
First I would like to thank Mr. [livejournal.com profile] hoobird for sending me this book.
I saw the movie that was based on the book back in the 1990's and the movie is very close to the book. It almost felt like I was reading a script for the movie.
It's a novelization of the last few days of movie director James Whale. Although he directed other great movies, he is probably most well known for his monster movies, Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, and The Invisible Man.
The novel tells of a relationship Mr. Whale has with his handsome groundskeeper while dealing with the poor health.
Mr. Whale was an openly gay man in Hollywood at a time that it wasn't necessarily hushed up, but basically tolerated. At least that is the understanding I get. But people do feel that it was the reason for the end of his career.
The softy in me was bawling at the end. I like to think that is the sign of a good book.

If I were to grade both the book and the movie, I would give them both a great big A+.
