Dear GOP, have you read the whole Bible?

All the Things the Bible Wants to Execute You For

All the GOP delegates declaring homosexuality a biblical sin punishable by death should tread carefully—and not gather any sticks on the Sabbath.

ok. imma gonna piss you off but...

the vast majority of that? comes from the old testament portion of the bible, with the exception of the blasphemy bit which CLEARLY states new testament.

jesus the dude (not the gardener*) did say himself that he did not come to abolish or change the law, but to fulfill it. he WAS the end of the jewish rules, which were laid out to separate god's people from everyone else. god's people had to follow those specific things to prove that they wanted to be his people and that they believed he was going to come and walk among his people.

so if you are not jewish (who believe that their messiah has not yet returned) or islam (who believe something different than jesus the dude [still not the gardener*]) being the messiah), and you are a christian? none of that applies here.

...yes, despite being a practicing pagan, i was brought up in the baptist church and have read the bible through a couple-three times, in different translations, and could STILL lay my hands on my very own personal bible within a few minutes should i need to. and i have to make these same damn arguments with my mother EVERY time i come home with a new tattoo. which will be this summer. *G*

*i have a Lawn Guy/Gardener who is a VERY nice man. he's also a latino jesus which is of course pronounced hey-ZOOS. great guy and imma be happy to see him in the am, since my lawn is past belly-high on a little dog, LOL

...and i really didn't type all this up to piss you off, just to show that anything can be taken too damn far. and now, i am gonna go see if i still have any frozen shrimps in the freezer to have for dinner. cause shrimps, they are against the old testament laws, too. *grins*

Not pissed at all, but confused.
Are you saying that Christians don't or aren't expected to follow the whole Bible? The ten commandments are a big part of the Christian religion, but are part of the old testament.

nope, they're not really expected to follow the whole bible. most of leviticus is the laws laid down for the "people of israel", the jewish people.

christians are to be led by the teachings of christ, in the first 4 books of the new testament. the *rest* of the teachings in the new testament are mostly paul's words, and he never met jesus. it's all his interpretation of what jesus was trying to teach.

jesus' teachings can be summed up in the words of bill and ted (from bill and ted's excellent adventure and bill and ted's bogus journey): be excellent to one another. treat others as you would wish to be treated, without hatred and bigotry, and you're doing god's work on earth. do the whole accept jesus as your lord and savior thing. do your best to sin no more (sin is an old archery term meaning "to miss the mark", so keep trying to hit the bullseye).

THAT is what being a christian is supposed to be.

So most Christians in the US are being taught to be Jews?

Date: 2016-03-22 02:15 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] fallconsmate.livejournal.com
not really. most people claiming to be christians are not reading the bible for themselves and UNDERSTANDING what they're reading.

the majority of christians in the US are "sunday christians". you know, the ones who show up on sunday morning and leave the teaching at the doorstep of the church when they walk out. or worse, the ones who attend on easter and christmas and that's it. (bonus points for semi-lapsed catholics who also show up for palm sunday and ash wednesday)

many if not most ministers/reverends/pastors are also at blame for not teaching exactly as the books were written, you know? so there are a lot of biased people ministering to ones who are not knowlegeable.

Sunday Christians piss me off.
That said, I use to be a holiday Christian, but don't even do that any more. I have never liked the organized/structure part of religion. :(

if you wanted to go that route, get a good bible whose language you can understand*, with a concordance in it. seriously. read it yourself, and look up stuff you don't understand, that's what the concordance does, it cross-references different verses so you understand them better.

i don't have problems with other religions. i figure some of us need religion, some of us don't. (i just quietly celebrated Ostara, the first of spring) i'm happy in my beliefs, anyone else can be happy in theirs, you know?

*hugs and hugs*

*there are LOTS easier translations than the king james bible. it was the latest thing when king james (who was a bit of a nut) commissioned it, but several centuries have passed! as i remember, i liked the new american standard bible.
