I think the thing that bothers me the most is people seem to have decided that they can say any awful thing they want to as long as they do a LAME apology afterward. :o

part of it is the call/response kind of media the public has come to expect
public or semipublic figure says something
media jumps on it - twitterverse explodes
much breast beating apology is expected - media & twitter await
subject complies with demand
