Part 2 for the day...

Are American citizens really that much worse then British subjects?

American police killed more people in March (111) than the entire UK police have killed since 1900

One doesn't know what they learn in their training...
But one thing that may add to this circumstance will be that guns nearly are forbidden for any civil persons in the UK.
I don't know how gun laws look like there, but I think they were very strict on this in the UK. That's why people often commit crimes rather using knives or why they raise combat dogs. These are items which are no subject of regular gun laws that apply to firearms.

Sadly there are too many people in this country that, IMHO, worship guns. :(

I wouldn't say that it's worshipping, I'd rather claim it's some lack of impulse control and tendency to appropriate / adult conflict managment behavior.

we are enamored of Wyatt Earp and the OK Corral
we think a gun is the way of the law no matter how much we deplore it when the "wrong man" gets shot

once American culture gives up it's love of guns
guns with a wonderful Freudian subtext
maybe then we can train our police to react differently

Sadly I don't think we will ever get away from guns in this country. :(

One has to take into account the population difference, of course, but even so...

People do have guns here and it's all to easy to get hold of one (so I am told) if you know the right people.

We don't have a right to bear arms, which is clearly a big difference (or a written constitution) - nor do regular police patrols carry firearms.

With regard to the comment made above about knife crime, it's true that it is a growing problem here. However, one has to be a lot closer to one's target to inflict harm with a knife, plus I am not aware of our police men and women carrying knives (and, I think, Jon, your post is about police officers shooting civilians, no?).

Yeah, it's pointing out the police use of deadly force. :(

That's what having an armed police force will do...
