Stores are fined for closing on Thanksgiving?! How bizarre.

I don't think larger stores are allowed to open here on Christmas Day or Easter Sunday and only for six hours any Sunday, but for being closed on any day..?

Only in America! ;o)

Yeah, that was the first I had ever heard of fining a store for closing.
WOW, stores are actually forbidden to be open on those days over there? :o

Small corner stores can open but a lot of those are run by folks for whom Christianity is not their faith and those communities need serving on those days as well as those who forgot the milk or bread! :o)

Letting the "mom and pop" shops open makes sense. Especially if they are non Christian costumer based.

Well, it's only two days out of 365. Stores here tend to have shorter opening hours generally, I think, than elsewhere. It only applies to stores over 280 square metres in England and Wales. Scotland has its own laws. Smaller shops can open when they like, but it's usually only corner shops and petrol stations that open on Christmas Day and Easter Sunday. I think it's fair enough, to be honest, since people should be able to get all they need from a corner shop or have enough essentials in the fridge at these times. How likely is it that they won't realise it's Christmas?! My mum often had to work on Christmas Day, as did but aunt, but they worked in essential services. I think it's a bit crass to suggest clothes-buying is an essential service and shop-workers, in my view, have as much right to Christmas Day off as I do. I think we English must have less spending power than you guys!

You won't get any arguement from me about stores should be closed on holidays.
If your business will only survive by opening on Thanksgiving, then you need to go out of business. UGH...

Indeed. I guess your government must be even more commercially minded than mine is! Saying that, we don't have Thanksgiving, of course, so it's just a normal working day for us.
