Date: 2014-09-04 07:49 pm (UTC)they are NOT set up like the rest of the states, on a democratic system run by the government. when the first white men came in and settled? they were catholic. and the whole state is set up under CHURCH law rather than otherwise.
oh, things have changed, and yes, the government is elected now, but the way the state laws are written have not. which is why you still have legal gambling everywhere, and legalities in sex trade, because the church considered those things vices and EVERYone has vices. as long as you confess them and do the proper prayers, you're good for another week. so therefore sex shops are still advertised on the freaking I-10, for example! *snerk*
but homosexuality is a "sin" rather than just a "vice", according to the bible, so therefore...it would have to be ruled down. when they take it to the next level of appeals, it is likely to be struck down, but the way the lousiana state laws are written? not so much.
TheEngineer's sister is a lawyer in lousiana. one branch of his company is in lousiana and he/we do a lot of going back and forth from there. so there have been a LOT of conversations about legalities and why things are done the way they're done. (to wit: the converasation we had about his mother's funeral, and how he and his sister insisted [to the confusion of their out-of-state cousins] that the grave be filled in BEFORE they left the cemetary. why? graverobbing is still a very much done thing in lousiana. even in broad daylight.)

Date: 2014-09-05 12:04 am (UTC)so no, there is not a real separation of church and state there, even though there SHOULD be. they don't even have COUNTIES, for the sake of the gods! it's set up in parishes, as in "church parish". the territory is set up as "x amount of land for each church" and parishoners went to the church in their parish, no fussing about it.
