A duck call is a whistle that hunters use to attrach ducks.
The guy in this picture...
Turned himself into this
in order to become part of the "Duck Dynasty" clan. They have a business that is making them millionaires selling duck calls.
Then they "became" hillbillies and got themselves a tv show. Then daddy showed himself to be a pedophilia promoting homophobic and the A&E Network decided it was more important to make money from their show then to cancel it.

Date: 2014-04-12 05:55 pm (UTC)was once a candidate for the heisman award (if you watch college football, that's a HUGE thing) and was a highly regarded draft pick from LSU. if he had gone to the pros, he would have done a MAJORLY good job...but he wanted to stay home.
then oil was found on the property. and they made duck calls so that they would NOT be people with money and no skills/job/something to keep them busy because that gets people into trouble. so...duck calls.
hunting is popular, the "romance" of the duck calls made by hand in the swamp took hold.
and as for the patriarch? if you've ever watched the show, you'd know that he's a man who is PUSSYWHIPPED into keeping his wife happy now (because of his cheating in the past), he adores his grandchildren, he mosty stays at home and keeps the peace. and as the end of the show ALWAYS shows "sunday night dinner" complete with prayer? they're a church-going clan.
no, they aren't perfect, as the recent books talking about infidelity and drug and alcohol abuse show. (books written BY the clan, not as "exposes" by outsiders)
so there's more to the mess of them than 2 photos and a few words show. just like every last one of us, you know? no, i don't watch the show since the bullshit spewed by the patriarch came out. but...i remember my OWN grandmother, who thought she was "progressive" by using the word "negro" instead of anything else.
and as far as the comments about not seeing african americans being treated badly goes? if you don't live anywhere near them, you don't know. in lousiana there are STILL areas that are segregated in the towns, not by law but just by who has lived there for a long long time. the area of baton rouge my SIL lives in? she is literally the ONLY white face for BLOCKS around. so there ya go.

All that clarified, I still do understand why the idea of it does make some folk uncomfortable... I just disagree with it being bracketed as paedophilia. :-)
