Book Reading.....
Jan. 21st, 2014 04:27 amI finished up reading book 3 yesterday morning.
I read The Garner Files: A Memoir by James Garner and Jon Winokur.
It's the autobiography of the actor James Garner. He is probably most famous from two of his tv shows, Maverick and The Rockford Files. It was an enjoyable read.
He grew up in Norman, Oklahoma. Life started pretty rough for him. His mom died when he was a young kid. Dad was an alcoholic. His dad remarried, and she was the stereotypical cruel step mother. She would beat James until one day when he was old enough he fought back and nearly killed her. She even took one of his older brother's virginity. :o
He didn't have a great education. After high school he bummed around from job to job. Not really sure what he wanted to do. He did a stint in the army and fought in the Korean War. On a whim he tried acting. He told himself he would give it 5 years and see what happened.
He met a woman and instantly fell in love with her. They got married shortly after that. She had a daughter who had been diagnosed with polio. Having this new family changed his outlook and he started trying harder at his acting career. He soon at his tv show Maverick and things took off from there.
Not knowing a lot about his personal life, it was nice to read that he was a bleeding heart liberal. Kind of surprising coming out of very red deep South Oklahoma. lol...
It was his peronality to stand up for the little guy and that is what partially made him somebody that so many people liked to work with. If a director was being an ass to the crew, he basically told the director to knock it off. :p
Also in the book on a few occasions, told it like it was as far as what he thought of some of the people he worked with, as far as liking or not liking them, or if he thought they were good or not good actors. :p
Some times the book felt a little thin when it came to information about stories he was telling, but over all it was a fun enjoyable read. :)
Grade: A-
