Book Reading.....
Jan. 18th, 2014 04:09 amI finished book 2 a couple of days ago.
I read Miss Buncle's Book by D.E. Stevenson. She was a Scottish author who wrote several books between 1923 and 1970.
Miss Buncle's Book was first published in 1934.
It's the story of Barbara Buncle, a middle aged, very plain woman who finds herself in a tight financial situation. With few options, she decides to write a book. As her subject she picks her neighbors in her little village. She changes all their names along with the village's name, but it's blatantly obvious to everyone that they are the ones in the book. Most of the villagers are extremely angry at having their lives thrown back in their faces. They go so far as setting up a meeting to figure out who John Smith, the name Barbara chose to write under, is. They eventually decide it must be the Doctor's wife because she doesn't appear in the book. They go so far as to kidnap her young twins to make her confess. She does so happily, knowing that it means absolutely nothing, and she get's her kids back quickly.
Many of the things that Barbara wrote in her book actually start to come true, to a degree. Two old neighbors run off and get married. Two "friends" take off for exotic places, albeit on doctor's orders. A super grouchy man becomes really nice to his family after reading the book and fearing that his wife really does plan to run away with another man. Etc Etc........
It was really a fun read. A nice simple story.
Grade: A-
