I finished reading book No. 20 the other morning and just keep forgetting to make an entry about it. :p
I read Wicked by Gregory Maguire.
I have had the book for quite awhile, but now that I am planning to see the musical in October, I thought I should probably read the book before seeing it.
I really hope the musical is better then the book. I wasn't blown away by it.
It seems like there is so much potential there and just never gets there, IMHO.
For those that may not be familiar with Wicked, it is mostly a prequel to The Wizard of Oz. Although the author does give his version of that story at the end of his book.
The story begins with Elphaba's, the Wicked Witch of the West, birth. It goes through the first couple of years of her birth, and then the next thing you know she is on her way to college. She meets Glinda, the Good Witch of the North.
They of course aren't what you would expect. The WWW becomes a political activist, and the Good Witch is a terrible classist snob.
The Wizard is an evil dictator. There is a revolt and the WWW sister, the WW of the East takes over Munkinland.
There are a few storylines that just seem to put in for sensationalism. Some of the WWW's college mates attend an underground nightclub type place where any thing and every thing can happen. You are left to assume that sex with any one and any thing goes on. Then nothing really more comes from that. At one point the child Lur, who is presumed to be the WWW's child nearly drowns. While reviving him and rubbing his body the author describes how one of the other boys in the house gets aroused. Other then later talking about his "attraction" to soldiers encamped outside their house, nothing comes of this story either.
