This one is kind of the Week in the Life...
Last Thursday I drove up to Minneapolis to see the show "Come From Away" with my dear friend, Neil aka
mrdreamjeans who was kind enough to invite me to see it.
Back ground:
"Come From Away" is a musical about the small town Gander, Newfoundland, Canada where several planes were diverted to because of the Sept. 11th terrorist attack. The small town nearly doubled in size because of this but they took everybody in doing everything possible to make them comfortable during their stay there.
The show is, at least to me, VERY emotional. You know it's hard to cry when you are wearing a mask.
If the show comes to a theater near you, PLEASE try to see it.
One of the saddest things I realized watching the show, all that goodwill between countries and between the people of our own country has pretty much evaporated.
Back to the story...
I drove to Neil's apartment building last Thursday got out my phone to let him know I was there, and lo and behold, there were missed calls and a tweet from him.
He tried to warn me before I drove up there that the show had been cancelled. Cast members either had Corona or were exposed to it.
So we spent the evening just hanging out, chatting, and watching some tv.
Spring ahead to yesterday, and Neil bought tickets to this Thursday's performance and he invited me to join him again.
The show continued after they brought in other actors from around the country and world.
It was/is a SUPER cold day, but I decided to go anyway because Neil had praised the show so much, after getting to see it on Sunday with another friend.
So I drove up to Minneapolis again.
I got about a mile from Neil's and I heard a weird sound come from my vehicle when I was sitting at a red light, but it didn't seem to effect the driving and it stopped as soon as I got through the intersection.
However, when I went to turn off that street, I had no power steering. WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I muscled the vehicle to Neil's place and parked it on the street in case I needed to get towed.
We had about half an hour before we had to leave for the show, and I spent it making arrangements for the neighbor to come take Maggie out at bed time in case I was overly late getting home, and then I started calling AAA to see if I had coverage to get towed home. Last year I had to get my battery jumped several times and they told me I used up all my service calls until my next anniversary date, which isn't until March. ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AAA is a massive joke. Pay out big bucks to have the Plus service and you are limited to something like 5-6 calls in a years time. Do they know what the weather is like in Minnesota? It's making me really think if I want to bother renewing my service.
After being told they could arrange a tow, but it would cost me $90 I pretty much had decided to try and drive my vehicle home. Yes, if I called a tow truck on my mine it would have cost a lot more then that, but it's the principle of the matter.
Anyway, we went to see the show, and I was blown away. AMAZING, as I said earlier.
We got back to Neil's place after the show, and I gathered up my things.
We went downstairs and I started up my vehicle and took off. I literally had to crank the steering wheel to turn corners. I did get out of Minneapolis and things were much smoother out on the highway.
When I got home to Stewartville, I parked my vehicle at my mechanic's place so I didn't have to muscle it back out there in the morning. Then I walked home.
The thermometer in my car said it was -13F/-25C. Needless to say, I was a popsicle by the time I got home, about a mile from the shop, and that was going cross country.
How did people drive cars before power steering. :o :o :o
Now fingers are crossed extra tight that my mechanic can get to and fix my vehicle today because I work all weekend.
