A Day in the Life.........
Sep. 4th, 2018 10:44 amKevin and I got up to the State Fair about 2 pm. We tried to park on the fair grounds, but they had it all closed off, which was kind of annoying because we could see plenty of open parking spaces. So we turned around and went looking for some parking at one of the Park and Ride spots. You can park for free and ride a bus to the fair grounds for free. First parking lot we stopped at had space and there was a bus waiting.
First thing we did was ride the Old Mill Ride. It's one of the oldest things at the fair grounds. It's kind of a water ride like Pirates of the Caribbean at Disney. You ride in a boat thought an underground tunnel seeing little scenes of elves and animals doing things.
After that I got some mini donuts and we walked around the Horticulture building. Checked out the artwork made with seeds.
The we road the Sky Ride over to the other end of the fair grounds. The wait for the ride was 35+ minutes.
Kevin was feeling the need for some food, so we stopped and he got some BBQ ribs.
Then we headed over to the Midway as Kevin wanted to take his chances at some Skeet Ball. Sadly he didn't win his big stuffed animal. :(
Then we headed clear over to another corner of the fair grounds to ride the BIG ferris wheel. I think it's suppose to be the largest traveling ferris wheel. There was a dad and his 4 year old son in the car we rode in and they were adorable. The son was an adorable 4 year old, and the dad was an adorable parent. You could tell he loved his little boy.
Then we found Kevin an ear of sweet corn and I got a Swedish Meatball sandwich. It was yummy, but not worth the near $9 they were charging for it. While we were at the Blue Barn getting my sandwich it started to rain some. We sat under a table umbrella and chatted with a couple of young ladies. They were quite a riot.
Eventually it got to be about 5:30 and we decided to head over towards the grandstand for the concert. Kevin stopped and hit the restrooms. As we got up to the grandstand I was like, Yeah, I probably should have gone to the restroom too. Thankfully they have some inside the grandstand.
Of course I had to stop and check out the souvenir counter. I went on a shopping spree and came away with 4 new tshirts and an autographed cd by Tom Bailey of the Thompson Twins.
We found our wet seats and people watched while waiting for the show to start. The rain would let up to almost nothing and then it would start in again. Not enough to make me pull out my rain poncho though. :p
The show started and Tom Bailey from the Thompson Twins came out with his all girl band, and of them dressed in white and played for about 45 minutes. He played mostly old hits, but also a couple of songs from his new album. He still sounds really good. :) Then there was a break to get the stage ready for the B52s.
The B52s came out and did about an hour set. They sounded great. They sounded great too. I enjoyed them even though I really do only know 2-3 sounds of theirs. Then another break. By now the rain had actually stopped. So it was kind of backward. The rain chances were suppose to get bigger as the night wore on. :p
Then Boy George and Culture Club came out and played for about 1 1/4 hours. It was the old Culture Club line up minus the drummer,Wonder if they are not getting along again, a few other players and back up singers. Boy George seemed to be in a really happy mood. When we saw him a couple of years ago, he seemed kind of grumpy. They played a bunch of their old hits, but also played some other people's songs, and being in the Twin Cities, they ended the show with a version of Prince's Purple Rain. It was very touching.
One of the funny/annoying things was most of the acts kept talking about "Being here in Minneapolis." One little problem there folks, the state fair is in St. Paul, not Minneapolis. :p
Culture Club got done and the short fireworks display played out. Gotta love fireworks. :)
After the show we headed out because I really wanted to get a few YUMMIES to fill my tummy. Unfortunately, almost every thing was already closed up. :o It was the final day of the fair, and instead of making as much last minute money as they could, they close things up early. ARGH... So no triple chocolate strawberry shortcake. No Norwegian banana split. No fresh kettle corn. So we headed out to find our bus back to the car, and made our way home. I got home, had a little something to eat, and then tried to work on LJ, but fell asleep for a good chunk of what was left of the night.
Now I need to wrap this up and get to bed, and try to sleep. lol.......
Another whole year before the state fair comes back. :(
