September 6th:

Got up and took a shower.
My sister-in-law was getting ready for work and she was going to take my niece to day care. My brother took the day off to show me around town.
First we went out to the military base where he works. He needed to make plane reservations for his trip the following week. Then he drove me around and showed me where he works, and where he had lived when he was still in the army. He told me about how things are run, aka monopolies on the businesses that can be on bases and things like that.
Then we headed to downtown Augusta. First we stopped at a "cultural center". It use to be a Catholic Church. Poeple can now rent it for parties and weddings and things like that. It was really beautiful inside, but after looking at it for awhile we decided it was mostly new. The stained glass windows looked too new. From there we headed down to the the "historic" district, aka the main drag. That is where the strip clubs are too. lol... My brother said they tried to close them down, but had to settle for legislation that says they can remain open as long as the current owners own them, but they can't sell them to anyone else and have them remain strip clubs.
We walked along the levee next to the river that seperates them from South Carolina. He said the levees are basically not needed any more because they have since built dams up stream. At one spot on the levee they have markings that show how high the previous floods had been.
We stopped into an art museum. The air conditioning was greatly appreciated. The first room we went through was photos from the 50s-70s from Mardi Gras. I thought that was pretty daring for a museum in the South. Photos of guys in drag. Of course as my brother pointed out, the museum gets a different clientele from the "average" Southerner.
I apologize for stereotyping, but you have to admit Southerners and drag queen/gays don't really go hand in hand.
I really enjoyed most of the rest of the museum too. They had some very beautiful paintings from the late 1800s. I really like that older "realistic" paintings as opposed to the modern and impressionism stuff. There were a few rooms with that kind of work too.
From the art museum we headed over to a museum for the city of Augusta. It was pretty interesting. However, like my brother pointed out, it was very slanted to White history. The Blacks of Augusta were skimmed over pretty quickly. Non the less, being a history buff, I really enjoyed it.
It was approaching supper time by now, so we headed back to the apartment to pick up my sister-in-law and my niece and went out to eat. It was my choice and because my brother was driving, I choose Applebees so I could have a chocolate martini. lol...... It was good, but not quite as good as I have had before. After eating we drove across the river so I could add the state of South Carolina to my list of states visited. Then we headed back to the apartment. We sat around and talked for awhile and watched some tv. Then it was off to bed, I had the long drive to Pensacola the next day.
